Solution for iPhone Apps Crashing

February 13th, 2010 by Scott

Ground Up Audio uses Basecamp® by 37signals to manage our app development and communicate internally. We highly recommend this service. It has made so many aspects of running our company much easier. However, logging in through a browser is not always convenient, I have been on the search for a Basecamp® client app for my iPhone®.

This morning I installed an app that I thought might be the answer. Unfortunately, the app, which will remain nameless, does not accept my login information, though the same information works in another Basecamp® client I’m trying out.

Even more unfortunately, after installing the app, my phone became quite crashy. While some apps would launch and run, most apps on my phone would launch and then quit after about 2 seconds. This was not acceptable behavior, so I decided to reboot my phone.

After rebooting, the app crashing problem was not fixed and I began preparing for the worst – restoring my iPhone® from a backup. Since, I consider that a last resort and had done just such a procedure only a few weeks ago, I thought I’d try some other tricks.

The solution? Reauthorize iTunes® and resync iPhone®. This simple procedure fixed the problem for me.

  1. Open iTunes® and Connect iPhone®
  2. Transfer Purchases. (See Apple Support)
  3. Deauthorize and Authorize iTunes® (See Apple Support)
  4. Sync iPhone®.
  5. Enjoy iPhone® Apps that don’t crash.

After following this recipe, all my apps work again, including the problematic app, though I still cannot login. I hope the problem with that particular app is resolved soon. If and when I have an answer for that, I will post the solution.
